I have loved the American Cocker Spaniel since my parents brought Pete home when I was 3 years old.
It is only in 2004 that I was inspired to breed "Blonde" Cockers by a dear friend, June Wollenberg, Poverty Peak Cockers. She provided my foundation
bitch, Poverty Peak's Meri Madeline (Ch April's Tiebreaker - Poverty Peak's Pumpkin Pie 12/21/02).
Since then, I have learned a lot about breeding and the breed standard...learned enough to know I don't know much at all. But I am fortunate to
have several highly experienced & respected breeder friends who are invaluable advisors and mentors, (including April Stich, Diana Grasseler, Joy
Stevens & Patti Nazarko), whose expertise I continually tap.
Breeding toward the goal of coming as close to the AKC breed standard as possible is an exciting & challenging pursuit. It requires a consistent
attention to all the things that result in healthy, happy dogs including health testing of sire & dam, pedigree research to ensure no undesirable genes
are brought into the line, uncounted hours of hard work assuring adults & puppies are provided the very best of care for their bodies AND their
minds & last but not least, a
passion for the breed.
Breeding dogs should ALWAYS be a passion. It should NEVER be a business or Ego Trip.
Once profit margin &/or Ego-Building become the goal, the integrity of the breeding program & the care the dogs receive come into serious question.
Since January 2005 I have had 3 litters. I spend more time & money on my dogs than I do on myself. I spend more time & money on health testing,
health maintenance, feeding ,entertaining, training, campaigning my dogs than I do on
anything else. And if I have the good fortune of selling a puppy
into a family I can trust to continue that commitment, the monetary reward I receive is insignificant relative to my investment & is inconsequential
compared to the happiness I feel when one of my puppies moves on to enrich the lives of another family. I am honored to be able to do what I am
doing. AND I now have my first Champion in
CH Merilegs' Kiss the Girls, Georgie Porgie. (CH Arikara Carbert Dare to Dream x Poverty Peak's Meri
Madeline). He's out of Madeline's 2nd litter, April 18, 2007 and my 2nd litter as well.
What a thrill!

My Puppies are born & raised in my home, handled & socialized to the touch of several different adults & children right from the start. As soon as they're old enough
they mingle with the other family dogs, becoming part of "the pack"/part of our family in the home, not in a kennel. As soon as they're vaccinated I take them to as
many places & events as possible to get them used to the big world. All of this combined with positive play & training ensures a litter of happy, healthy,
well-socialized, bomb-proof Cockers who then become healthy, well-adjusted, loving companions in the families they move on to. They're showy, athletic and Full of
Joy.
